Reopening of Schools.

1 min read

For the past few months, students have been learning online. This is due to nationwide school closure after the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the country.

Homeschooling has affected working parents who rely on school for childcare. This has led to the consideration of safe reopening. Education CS George Magoha has however warned parents against pushing for reopening.

School reopening has been the toughest decision by the government since it is set to be expensive.

A concrete way forward by the Ministry of Health will also help us work instead of falling in the middle ”said an education official.

This may be done in a phased manner and once a school has put in place the operating procedures, the government will flag the opening of remaining classes.

School heads should ensure there is adequate clean-running water and sanitation facilities to mitigate the virus spread.

Also, schools should buy disinfectants, face masks and first aid kits. To avoid crowding, co-curricular activities such as sports, inter-school competitions have been suspended.

Assemblies will be done in classes for prayers and health announcements. Schools will also have to refurbish washrooms and bathrooms.

Each school will have to come up with a COVID-19 response team that should not exceed five members.
