The debate has been postponed to Tuesday, September 15.

The speaker Ken Lusaka said the decision will help senators unite and agree on a formula. This comes after the council of Governors threatened to shut down the counties because of inadequate funds.

Senate county revenue sharing debate

Majority Whip, Senator Irungu Kang’ata supported the Upper House’s reluctance, claiming that the procedure and the outcome was vital.

We will wait for as long as we can, because we just don’t want to hasten the process, but we want to arrive at the best possible solution for all counties,” Kangata said.

In the previous meeting, Senators had harsh dialogue, each one defending their stand over third basis revenue formula.

Speaker Ken Lusaka ruled out senators voting on behalf of their arrested colleagues. This made those in support of government’s position led by Senator Orengo and Kang’ata to call on a talk.

Given what the Constitution and the standing orders say, and we are guided by the constitution and the standing order, my hands are tied, there is nothing that I can do but to say that we will follow the constitution,” Lusaka said

Despite the dramatic arrest of the three senators, Cleophas Malala(Kakamega), Christopher Lang’at (Bomet), and Steve Lelegwe(Samburu), the senators agreed on the formation of a committee to solve the matter.

The committee co-chaired by Johnson Sakaja and Moses Wetangula to present two reports to the House leadership in two weeks.
