17 March 2021, Tanzanian president John Magufuli is dead. His death was announced by the country’s vice president Samia Hassan.
Magufuli had been receiving treatment at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute in Tanzania where he suffered a stroke earlier in the day and eventually succumbed while receiving treatment at the facility.
Earlier, it had been reported that Magufuli had been suffering from an illness that was suspected to be COVID-19, but he later emerged and criticized journalists for reporting and wishing him death.
Leading to his death, questions had been raised by the opposition over the missing president, with accusations pouring in that the government had been withholding information concerning the president’s illness and whereabouts.
Up to his death, journalists had been arrested for reporting Magufuli’s illness. One man had been arrested in the Kinondoni area for allegedly reporting his illness with the cops considering him spreading false statements.
On the 17th March 2021, the vise president reported that John Pombe Magufuli, Tanzania’s president, had died.
