Ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been transferred to Kamiti Maximum Prison from Gigiri police station pending bail ruling tomorrow over multiple assault charges.
Sonko’s lawyer Assa Nyakundi has confirmed.
His lawyers had sought his movement to Muthaiga Police Station over alleged threats but a drastic move has seen him taken to Kamiti.
The DCI wants to detain Sonko for 30 days pending investigations citing several counts against Sonko, including his being accused of procuring uniform resembling military attire, which he has previously been spotted wearing in contravention of the rules governing its use.
On Tuesday 3 February, appearing before a Kiambu court, Sonko denied a total of 12 counts against him.
Assault causing actual bodily harm, robbery with violence and destruction of property among other charges Sonko will face.
Sonko’s lawyers said the charges against him were political due to public statements he made recently linking Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho to the 2017 violence.
