Raila Odinga inooro fm interview bbi cost 5b not 14b

February 4, 2021, Nairobi, Raila Odinga has said that the BBI referendum should not cost more than Ksh 5 billion while being interviewed on Inooro FM.

This comes after the IEBC’s Chebukati had insinuated that the BBI referendum will cost Ksh 14 billion.

The ODM leader elaborated that elections in Kenya are the most expensive in the world, listing the cost per ballot in sample countries, including the United States of America and Nigeria.

According to him, the cost per ballot in Kenya is USD $7 compared to Nigeria’s USD $5, and the United States’ USD $0.5.

This makes the cost of elections in Kenya extremely high and a burden to the mwananchi, when comparatively it can be cut down to the tune of that of the Americans.

Raila explained that the reason for the high cost of elections is because of the “mavuno” (time to harvest) culture that’s synonymous with Kenyans during the time of elections. This hints at the fact that IEBC contracts are overestimated to create room for a few people to steal election money to enrich themselves.

While still on the interview on Inooro FM, the former prime minister also noted that the BBI is not being pushed down the throats of Kenyans, but is a good change that’s meant to change the lives of Kenyans.

“BBI si lazima ipite,” he said, “lakini iko kusaidia wananchi wa Kenya.” [It is not a must that the BBI is passed, but it is here to help the common citizen of the country.
