Saturday, November 23, 2019 – A landslide is feared to have killed at least 24 people in the south of West Pokot county.
Area commissioner Apollo Okello reports that of the 24 people killed by the mudslide, 7 are feared to be children.
The catastrophic event is said to have been caused by heavy rains that have hit the area in the past few days. Floods and now landslides have occurred in the area, affecting the villages of Nyarkulian, Muino and Parua in the West Pokot county.
The county commissioner has said that 12 bodies have been recovered from the mud, 7 of them being children.
More efforts are being done to rescue those trapped in the mud although stones and mud have cut off access to the area on the Kitale Lodwar highway.
